Adoption success stories

Adoption Updates and My Goodness… It’s September Already!

I’m normally not a fan of the year flying by, but given I wanted to return 2020 to sender all the way back in March, I’m happy to help shuffle it out the door as quickly as possible.

If you haven’t visited us lately, I have great news – as of last week we’ve been able to return to indoor food service and consumption!

Our capacities are still a bit limited, but at least you can now enjoy Cat & Craft as it was intended to be enjoyed – kitty snuggles with a side of yummy food and beverage!

Who knows what lies ahead so if you’ve been thinking about visiting, come on in soon!

Now time for my favorite subject – ADOPTION UPDATES!

Three San Diego County Cat Cafes, The Cat Café in downtown San Diego, The Cat Lounge Rescue and Adoption Center in La Jolla and Cat & Craft in Vista, will provide discounts to people who have been displaced by the Los Angeles fires. At all three locations, those showing government identification with addresses in the affected areas will receive a 50 percent discount on weekday walk in admissions. Like all walk in admissions, these will be available on a first come, first served basis subject to space limitations. “We know that this gesture can’t make up for the stress caused by the fires,”said Tony Wang, General Manager of The Cat Café. “However, petting a cat for a few minutes may help take their minds off of it for a while and help them relax.” “We know how challenging this time is, and we believe the unconditioned love and companion ship of a cat can provide comfort and healing. This initiative is our way of standing with our community in a time of need,” said Renee Shamloo, Executive Director of The Cat Lounge Rescue and Adoption Center. Delaney Davis, Assistant General Manager of Cat & Craft, added, “Our hearts go out to LA and all the families that have lost their homes due to the fires. Our doors are open to provide them some peace amidst all the chaos. We hope our staff and foster kitties can be a bright spot during these difficult times.” For more information, visit our websites at catcafesd.com ; thecatlounge.com ; and catandcraftcafe.com

Adopting a cat is an exciting and rewarding experience, but it’s also a big decision. Cats come in all shapes, sizes, and temperaments, and finding the right fit for your lifestyle is key to creating a harmonious home for you and your new feline friend. If you’re a first-time adopter, this guide will help you navigate the process and choose the best cat to match your living situation, energy level, and personal preferences. 1. Assess Your Living Space One of the first things to consider when adopting a cat is your living environment. Different cats thrive in different settings, so it’s important to consider your home's size and nature. Small Apartments: If you live in a smaller space, such as an apartment, you may want to consider a cat with a more laid-back, low-energy personality. Cats that are content lounging and don't require much space to roam will adapt well to apartment living. Large Homes with Outdoor Access: If you have a larger home or access to a secure outdoor area, you might opt for a more active or curious cat who enjoys exploring and playing. Some cats even enjoy leash training for supervised outdoor time. In any case, make sure your home has safe spaces for your cat to rest, climb, and explore. Cats are naturally curious creatures and love vertical spaces, so investing in cat trees or shelving can help enrich their environment, regardless of size. 2. Consider Your Lifestyle and Schedule Your daily routine and activity level significantly determine what kind of cat will best suit your lifestyle. Cats are often considered independent but still need interaction, play, and mental stimulation. Busy Professionals: If you work long hours or travel frequently, consider adopting a more independent cat that doesn’t require constant attention. Older cats, in particular, tend to be more self-sufficient and may be a better match if you can’t spend as much time at home. Stay-at-Home or Remote Workers: If you have a more flexible schedule and are home often, you may be able to care for a more social or high-energy cat. These cats thrive on interaction, playtime, and cuddles throughout the day. Cats with higher energy levels, like kittens or playful breeds, may require more time and engagement to keep them happy. Ensure you have the time to invest in their physical and mental well-being. 3. Think About Temperament Like people, cats have unique personalities. Some are outgoing and friendly, while others are more reserved or independent. It is essential to choose a cat with a temperament that complements your personality and lifestyle. Social and Playful Cats: If you’re looking for a cat that will engage with you and actively seek interaction, consider a more social breed or individual cat. Cats like the Ragdoll, Siamese, or Maine Coon are known for being affectionate and loving human company. Additionally, individual cats in shelters may have personalities that make them naturally more social. Calm and Independent Cats: If you prefer a more independent and calm cat, breeds like the British Shorthair or Scottish Fold might be a better fit. Regardless of breed, senior cats tend to be more laid-back and are often happy to spend their days napping in a cozy spot. It’s always a good idea to spend time with different cats before deciding. Many shelters and cat cafés (like Cat & Craft) provide opportunities to interact with cats in a relaxed environment so you can get a sense of their personalities before adopting. 4. Consider the Cat’s Energy Level Energy levels can vary widely between cats, and choosing one that matches your expectations for playtime and activity is essential. High-Energy Cats: If you’re looking for a playful companion who loves to run, jump, and play with toys, consider adopting a kitten or a young cat. These cats have lots of energy and need regular stimulation to stay happy and healthy. Be prepared to engage in interactive play and provide enrichment activities, like puzzle feeders or cat tunnels. Low-Energy Cats: If you’re looking for a more relaxed companion who is content with lounging and cuddling, an older cat or a naturally calm breed may be the right choice. These cats enjoy a quieter, slower-paced environment and may not need as much playtime. Choosing a cat with the right energy level ensures that you and your new pet feel comfortable and fulfilled in your shared home. 5. Health and Special Needs It’s also essential to consider the cat’s health and any special needs. Some cats may require extra care due to chronic health conditions, disabilities, or dietary restrictions. Senior Cats: Older cats are often overlooked in shelters but can make wonderful companions. They are typically calmer and require less training than kittens. However, they may need more frequent vet visits and specialized diets. Cats with Special Needs: Adopting a cat with special needs, such as a blind or deaf cat, can be incredibly rewarding. These cats are often just as affectionate and loving as any other, but they may need accommodations to help them thrive in your home. Before adopting, speak with the shelter or rescue organization about any medical conditions the cat may have and ensure you’re prepared to provide the care they need. 6. Ask the Shelter or Rescue for Help Finally, don’t be afraid to ask for help! Shelter staff and volunteers often know their cats well and can help match you with a cat that fits your lifestyle. They can give you insights into the cat’s personality, behavior, and background, making it easier to find the right fit. At Cat & Craft, we take the time to understand our cats and potential adopters. Our goal is to create lasting matches that benefit both the cat and its new family. If you’re unsure which cat is right for you, our team is always here to guide you. Conclusion Adopting a cat is a life-changing experience; finding the right feline companion can bring years of joy, love, and companionship. By considering your living space, lifestyle, the cat’s temperament, and energy level, you’ll be well on your way to choosing the perfect cat for your home. Remember, whether you’re adopting a playful kitten or a senior cat, the bond you create will be truly special. Ready to find your purr-fect match? Imagine sipping your favorite cup of coffee in a cozy cafe while a fluffy, purring cat curls up next to you. This might sound like an idyllic scene, but it’s more than just a relaxing moment. The combination of cats and coffee can have profound benefits for your mental health and overall well-being. At Cat & Craft, we believe that the companionship of a cat, paired with a perfectly brewed coffee, creates a unique experience that elevates your mood and helps relieve stress. 1. The Science Behind Coffee’s Mood-Boosting Power For many, the day starts with that first cup of coffee. This isn’t just a ritual—it’s a scientifically backed mood booster. Caffeine, the main component in coffee, is known for stimulating the central nervous system, which can improve focus, reduce fatigue, and enhance mental clarity. It increases the release of dopamine, the "feel-good" neurotransmitter, which explains why coffee drinkers often report feeling happier and more energized after their cup of joe. Studies have also shown that moderate coffee consumption is linked to lower rates of depression and anxiety. The antioxidants in coffee may help protect brain cells from damage, supporting long-term mental health. So, when you sip your coffee at Cat & Craft, you're not just enjoying a beverage—you're giving your brain a little happiness boost. 2. The Therapeutic Effects of Cats Anyone who has ever owned a cat knows they bring a sense of calm and comfort. Petting a cat can trigger the release of oxytocin, the "love hormone," which fosters feelings of bonding and relaxation. Watching a cat play, sleep, or purr can lower blood pressure, reduce anxiety, and even alleviate symptoms of depression. Spending time with cats has been shown to help manage stress, especially for those with high-pressure jobs or busy lifestyles. Cats have an uncanny ability to live in the moment, and their calm demeanor often helps us slow down and appreciate life's little pleasures. At Cat & Craft, we’ve created a peaceful, cat-friendly environment where you can enjoy the presence of these wonderful animals. Whether you're watching them play or simply enjoying their quiet company, being around cats can bring a sense of calm and joy. 3. The Power of the Cat-Café Combo Now, let’s talk about the magic of combining cats and coffee. Cat cafés, like Cat & Craft, offer the best of both worlds—a soothing atmosphere where you can recharge with a cup of coffee while enjoying the calming presence of cats. This combination can be especially beneficial for those who may not have pets at home or for people who need a break from their daily routine. The ambiance of a cat café promotes mindfulness, a state of being fully present in the moment. When you focus on the warmth of your coffee, gentle purring, and the sight of playful kittens, your worries fade into the background. This mindful relaxation can have long-lasting effects on your mental health, helping you return to your day with a clearer mind and a more positive outlook. 4. Fostering Human-Animal Bonds Humans are hardwired for connection, which extends beyond just other people. The bond between humans and animals, particularly cats, has been studied for years. Interacting with animals helps release serotonin, another feel-good chemical in the brain, which improves your mood and creates a sense of well-being. This is why animal-assisted therapy is so effective for people suffering from anxiety, depression, or PTSD. At Cat & Craft, our cats also look for their forever homes. While enjoying your coffee, you may form a bond with one of our resident cats. This not only brings joy in the moment, but adopting a cat can offer long-term emotional benefits, including companionship, routine, and unconditional love. 5. Creating a Sanctuary of Calm In today’s fast-paced world, finding spaces where you can relax and recharge is more important than ever. Cat & Craft is more than just a café—it’s a sanctuary of calm where you can escape the chaos, immerse yourself in the soothing presence of cats, and enjoy a cup of coffee brewed with care. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick coffee break or spending an afternoon curled up with a book and a furry friend, our environment is designed to nurture your mental and emotional health. The combination of cats and coffee creates an experience that’s as nourishing for the soul as it is for the body. Conclusion The health benefits of cats and coffee are more than just a pleasant side effect—they’re a powerful combination that can improve your mental health, reduce stress, and boost your mood. Whether you're a cat lover, a coffee enthusiast, or someone simply looking for a peaceful escape, Cat & Craft offers an experience like no other. So, the next time you need a break, visit Cat & Craft. Have a coffee, spend time with our cats, and let the healing begin—one purr and one sip at a time.
